TUESDAY, JULY 31.
In the Legislative Council, A Bill was introduced to encourage the planting* of trees. The Constabulary Bill was passed. Other Bills were considered in ComIn the House, a number of -peti tions were received. Amongst the notices of motion given was one by Mr Macandrew, asking* the House to order that several railways be constructed forthwith, for opening up the outlying districts of Otago. Sir G. Grey gave notice to move for trtennial Parliaments, and the granting* of sufi rages to every m&le 21 years of age. Mr Rolleston asked whether the Government would print the suggesj tions of County Councils and Road j Boards, bs to amending the future I system of local government. | The Hon. Mr Whitaker said they were too voluminous, and the expense of printing* would be too great. In reply to Mr Richmond, Mr Whitaker said it was not the intention of the Government to relieve the Road Boards from the compulsory annual valuation as laid down in the Rating Act. Mr Stafford atked whether the Government will introduce a Bill to provide for the closing of ali cemeteries within towns. The Hon. Mr Whitaker said they hopod to be able to do something during the present session. The Auckland Highway Districts Valuation ' Bill was read a second time, put through Committee, and passed in Committee. The Crossed Cheques Bill was discussed and passed. The debate on the Charitable Institutions Bill was resumed and continued up till the adjournment.
