THURSDAY, JULY 26.
Mr Kelly asked if the Government; intended to place upon the estimates a shm for distribution among the various Agricultural Societies to promote agricultural and - :pastoral industries. ' It was the : practice in other Colonies to give such grants, and Victoria was especially liberal. Mr- Reid remarked it was not the intention of the Government t n give any sum of money for distribution. The plan had been tried in Otago nnd found most prejudicial, because those | who used to give assistance in their ! private capacities formerly, declined to do so when they found local societies had received a grant. On the motion of Mr Murray, A return was promised of ali payment's made from the Colonial Treasury since October, 1876, to those who held office as Superintendents of Provinces and members of Provincial Executives, and the nature of the services for which payments had been made.
