THURSDAY, JULY 26.

Mr Kelly asked if the Government; intended to place upon the estimates a shm for distribution among the various Agricultural Societies to promote agricultural and - :pastoral industries. ' It was the : practice in other Colonies to give such grants, and Victoria was especially liberal. Mr- Reid remarked it was not the intention of the Government t n give any sum of money for distribution. The plan had been tried in Otago nnd found most prejudicial, because those | who used to give assistance in their ! private capacities formerly, declined to do so when they found local societies had received a grant.
