Sir, — We, tho undersigned Electors of Balclutha, respectfully request you will allow yourself to be put in nomination at tho forthcoming election for Mayor of the Municipality. Wo mako this request for tho following, amongst othor reasons : — Wo believe that Balclutha, being the natural centre of a very wide agricultural district, is yet destined, if properly managed, to become a town of considerable commercial importance. There is a prospect that within a short period the Southern Trunk Line of Railway will bo opened, not only to the township, but also through to Invercargill. To judge from thfe elfocts of similar changes in other parts and othor countries, the opening up of tho railway communication rof owed to will have tho effect of shutting up many old channels of tratlic and opening \ip now ones. That under thoso circumstances, in order that the interests of the township may bo conserved and enhanced by tho changes talcing plaes, it is absolutely necessary that there should bo placed at the head of aflairs men who have a permanent interest in tho advancement of the town and district ■ men of ability and ample practical experience : and mon who havo the time aud facilities to enable them io promote the best interests of tho town, and also mon whoso position in society is such aa will command alike the respect of the community and iky. attention of the gentlemen forming the Government of tho country. Your former experience as Councillor and Mayor ; as a member of the late Provincial legislature ; your present position as Chairman of tho Clutha County Council, coupled with tho fact that you have ever identified yourself with the interests, of Balclutha, and exerted yourself for its welfare ; together with the additional fact that you are about to establish a most important branch of business iv our midst, j point to you as above all others the man who should bo placed at the head of ai-'airs hero in the present transition statu of the town and district, Wo therefore trust you will, see your way to comply with our request, and wo need scarcely add that should you do so, wo havo every confidence the step, v.- 11l meet with the approbation of the electors generally.
