At the half-mile Maggie wont to tho front, and never was collared, winning easily by six or eight lengths. The next event was the Hubdms Race, of 7 soys, with a sweep of 20s each for second horse. Distance, ono mile and three-quarters, over six flights of hurdles. There were only two entries for this race, viz. : — J. Lawson's Romance, aged (Owner) 1 W. G. Kerlo's Freedom (Cheyne) 2 This was a regular gift to Romance, he never really going out of a canter, and taking all Ids jumps spendidly, Freedom coming in a very poor second. The next race was the Disteict Plate, of 12 soys, for all horaoa owned within nine miles of Gore. Distance, one mile and three-quarters. Weight, l.Osfc. J. Lawson's Romance ... ...(Dyer) 1 J. Black's Maggie ... (Cheyne) 2 W. Pollock's Rufus ... (Cameron) 3 J. Tweedio's Sir Lancelot (Owner) 0 This was the best race of the day. -At the fall of the flag, Romance went away with the lead, but was quickly overhauled by Maggie, who raced neck and neck with him to the finish, and lost by barely a length, Rufus a bad third. Hack Race, for saddle value 7 soys. Mile heats. Catch weights. There were nine entries for this event. The first heat was won easily by Dunbar, the second by Rufus, and iii running oh the chestnut proved too much for Dunbar and won easily. Huhry Souury. There were seven entries for this event, which, was won by Walkover, with Wos Colleen second. \ During the intervals between the horse
races, there were two foot races, of 100 and 250 yards, both of which were easily won by Mullaly. Tho hop, step, and jump was pulled off by Wallace. There was a good attendance at tho meeting, and everything passed off satisfactorily. Great credit is due to the stewards for their efforts to make the whole concern a success, in which they succeeded, notwithstanding the counterattractions of another race meeting at Wyndham, and a coursing match at Edendale.
