Wellington, May 31. In reference to complaints re nonpayment by the General Government of subsidies to counties, road boards, and Boroughs, it appears that in the Provincial district of Auckland alone 12 counties, 119 road beards, and two boroughs have been paid, and that the remaining ten road boards and the counties have not been paid as yet because they have failed to furnish those complete returns, without which the subsidies cannot legally be handed over. The same applies to other distr'u t >.
The New Zealand Government has received a telegram from the Home Government granting permission to Sir W. Gervoiae and Colonel Scratchley to visit New Zealand to report on harbour defences. These officers may therefore shortly be expected in Wellington.
The Loan and Mercantile Company report under date London, May 20: — Wool : The Continental demand has fallen off. Superior greasy declined a halfpenny to a penny. Washed combing market is easy.
