YEOMANRY TOURNAMENT.
In connection with" , the formation of a yeomanry corps in the Cluthu, and as indicating the nature of the exercices •rind .sports which may shortly be expected to follow, .we,] copy* from the Wanganui Herald the following- account of a< cavalry - tou rn a mom/H) eld the other day in that- quarter,.: -—The proceedings were conducted by a committee composed of- Majors ,\' on Ire-arid Nixon, Oupiains Parkos, Higgle, . and Neill, Sergl- Major Bi-'zar, Drill-Instructor Carley, and -Private Soiner-ville, secretory. 1 lie jumps, were erected by Mr S. Wall, and the various competitors were satisfied with them. Up to the time of our reporter leaving the ground no accidents had occurred, but Trooper E. Symes, of the Wairoa Light Hoi'se, got a, good shaking 1 by his horse fallingat one of the hurdles in 'tli'e second contest. The Wairoa men were well mounted, and displayed some excellent horsemanship, but those of the Alexandras who participated in the contest managed their horses well. ;f.irs'? contest.. .... Four prizes, open' to half, sections or iilos of two men under the, Jfollowing conditions-: — Squads will ride a distance of about a quarter of' a mile,-, including 1 over two fixed 3ft. . Gin. hurdles. Time, 3 minutes. Entrance, £1 per squad, which will be divided 'as follows:: — let prize, half entrance ; 2nd, do, ; quarter entrance j 3rd do, itenth entrances. Resume of "the' 'match. — Squad wißl start by gun-fire .from k given point, some quarter of a mile distant from dhe target; will jump the. tw.o 3 ft. 6in. hurdles, and on arriving 1 , at , the firing' point, will dismount" and fire as many shots as possible till the " cease firing-" sounde. Wall J Six other squads competed. The conditions of • the contest were: — Each squad will rule a distance of about balf-a-mile, including overfourh'xed 3ft. Gin, hurdles. The two flank files will disbe mount during the course at a point to indicated, and fire five shots each at'the 100 yards range — the centre file holding the horses ; they will then remount and ride the remainder of the distance, •flank files again dismounting, and firing as many shots as \ possible at the 200 yards range till the " cease firing" sounds. Time, seven" minutes. The winning- -squad is composed of members of the Wairoa troop, who displayed on this occasion good horsemanship and capital, shooting. : .". *-•' THIRD CONTiiSf; Post Practice. — Open, to competitors under the following conditions. -f-rEabh competitor will ride his i horse a't' : a fair gallop past a post indicated' at 30 yards from No. 1 post, and 'continue to^ gallop until he has passed a points 3o yards from No. 8 post.
