THE HON. G. M'LEAN AT KAKANUI,
The Hon. the Commissioner of Customs paid a visit to Kakanui Port and Harbourworks on Wednesday, arrivin«by the 5A p.m, train from Mceraki. He was met at the Maheno station by the members of the Kakanui Harbour Board, and driven by Mi Maclennan, the Chairman of the Board, down to the port. Here he had quite a reception, the Crest of the Wave, schooner, lying alongside the south pier discharging coal, being decked with flags from stem to truck, and the ensign and signal flags flying at the Signal Staff. The township was also gay and set with bunting, and almost the entire population of the town, and a large number from the surrounding district, turned out to welcome the visitor. Mr M'Lean was shown over the Works by the Chairman of the Board, the Engineer, Mr T. M. Hardy-Johnston, and the Harbourmaster, Captain Matheson J and expressed himself greatly astonished at the amount of work which had been done in so short a time, and the excellent manner in which it had been carried out, which reflected great crediton the contractors and the Engineer. He had not the slightest idea that such a depth of wafer could be obtained in | tbe entrance channel as had been obtained, and was agreeably surprised to find that the work had proved so signal a success. All that was wanted was money to complete the work so well begun, which would no doubt make Kakanui one of the nicest little harbours on the coast. Mr M'Lean Avas then driven to the residence of his father-in-liw, the Hon. Matthew Holmes, Awamoa, and left yesterday morning by train for Christchurch.-— *North Otago Times,
