SUTTEE IN INDIA.
The following account of a case of suttee by the District Superintendent of Tinnevelly appears in the Administration Report of the Madras Police : — A curious and very remarkable case of suttee has occurred in the village of RamacbandrabTam, Streevilliputtur division* The Victim was a young widow, aged 25 years, Noopadaree Velle tJmmal, of the Pannikan caste. She was childless, and had lost her husband, Sicthomoni, about four months previous to her act. His death overwhelmed her with grief. She became a devotee, and speht^ nearly all her money in feeding religious mendicants. She resided in a Small house. A few days before ber death, she, unassisted, dug a pit in the floor of one of her rooms. The pit was filled by her with sandal and other. scented woods* She steeped her clothes in dye of which the prin- i cipal ingredient appears to have been red ochre* Having made these preparations, she, on the night alluded to, secured all the doors of; her house from the inside, enveloped herself* in her dyed garments, set fire to the Wood, and threw herself in the flaimes. It was Pa purely voluntary act. No one assisted her. An inquest was. held, and the body burned* ■ .
