THE EXPRESS ENGINE.
Majestic it stands in its polished bands, •;■}. A harness of iron and steel ; f< It waits the commands of its driver's ;- A hands, * A And longs its power to feel. 7 ! 0 ! its mighty spirit is meek and tame, A Yet measures of miles its sinews dis- A dain — lv It laughs, for its food is the roaring flame ; A Unbounded its joy as is loosed the rein, \ To dart like a fiend away. ' It snorts with delight as it bears its freight Away with the speed of the wind ; Its emblem of might is its banner white That streams like a cloud behind. Defiant it flies from the tempest's wrath, f The thunder's roar, or the lightning's gleam ; Loud-sounding afar on its iron path, It bounds thro' hill, o'er valley and [. stream, '• And shoots like a meteor away. Thro' dark forests lone its challenge rolla on, Shrill-sung with a conqueror's might ; Triumphant in tone, earth's uttermost : zone Will echo the shout with delight. A ' For Liberty rides on its rattling wheels, And peace is proclaimed with its fiery breath ; To the sOul of the slave 'tis freedom's peals, And Tyranny quakes 'neath the knell of death, Which bursts from its bosom away.
