OWAKE SCHOOL SOIREE.

-" ' ♦' ' A soiree and ball, in aid of the school funds, was held in the OAvake schoolhouse on Friday last. The room was croAvded in spite of the muddy roads and threatening aspect of the weather. Tables, which augured Avell for empty stomachs, were provided by Mesdames Harle and Thorn, Mesdames Esler, M'lntyre, Vial, and Sutherland, and Mesdames Logan and Sandlant. After tea, the chair Avas taken by Mr Macandrew, Avho stated that tho Rev. Mr Bannerman bad been precluded from being present that evening on account of a previous engagement. Mr Bannerman desired him to express bis regret at being unable to be present, but that he wouldvisit the district very shortly, and give a lecture on behalf of the school funds. The following programme was then gone through :— Song, Mr AndreAv ; recitation, "Meddlesome Matty," Miss Carrie Dutton. This Avas very tastefully done. Song, Mr Sandlant ; song, Miss Jackman ; recitation, Master Oliver Sandlant ; song, Mr Paterson ; song, Mrs Thorn ; song, Mr Crews ; recitation, Miss Etty Dutton ; song, Mr Falconer ; song, " Bed, White, and Blue," Mr Andrew. This song waa decidedly the hit of the evening. Recitation, " Hamlet on the Immortality of tho Soul," Mr Danford; song, Misses Tuck and Millar \ song, Mr Sandlant ; song, Miss ■Martha Logan This young lady received; a hearty encore, which Avas responded to. 77 There Avas then an exhibition of Punch and Judy ; after winch .the., floor wast cleared for dancing, which was kept up with great Spirit till " daylight did an* pear.
