WASTE LANDS BOARD.

The weekly meeting of the Waste Lands Board was held on Wednesday. Present ; Messrs Strode (in the chair), Clarke, ancl Butterworth.

Application was made on behalf of Nicholas Morse for a lease of ten acres on section 17, block VI., Chatton district, for a coal mine : adjourned for further consideration. '

Charles Stroever applied for a ten years' lease of two acres on the same section, which was also adjourned for further consideration.

John M'Leod applied for about seven acres of a cemeteiy reserve at North Taieri, stating that the reserve was no longer required as a cemetery. The Board had no power in the matter, it being in the hands of trustees.

G. li. Smith applied, under the Volunteer Act Amendment Act, 1874. for a lease of section 8, block VII., Otago ancl Peninsula district, as a rifle range for the Dunedin Naval Brigade and Artillery. Application granted.

The District Land Officer at Lawrence forwarded a letter which he had received from W. J. Cross, surrendering his right to deferred payments, section 50, block 11., Tuapeka West. Applicant was allowed to surrender the land.

The District Land Officer at Invercargill transmitted for cancellation, deferred payment licenses 124 and 126.

Licenses cancelled, and land to be advertised as being open for application.

The Government recommended that sections 1 to 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, block IX., Chatton district, and sections 12 to 16, 18 to 25, 27 to 29, block 1., Glenkenich district, should be declared land of special value, ancl sold by auction under the 85th clause of the Act, it being improved by fencing, etc. Approved.

The following made application to purchase land at Ll per acre : — Wm. Currie, section 18, block IV., Swineburn district ; William Draper, sections 46 and: 203, block IL, Tuapeka district. Draper to forfeit all claim to the land in question, the Board finding that they are precluded from taking any other course ; land to be put up for sale by auction at the upset price.

John M'Kellar asked the sanction of the Board to burn scrub and dead manuka lying on the ground over the Waikaia hundred, as required by the 12Sth clause of the Waste Land Act, 1872. Request granted, applicant to be liable for any damage that may occur to private property.

Mr James O'Brien requested that sections 2 and 3, block 1., Tuapeka West district, might be submitted to auction, as he was desirous of purchasing the land, having it for twelve years as a residence area. Referred to District Land Officer for report.

Ranger Valpy transmitted a letter received from the Secretary of the Outram Road Board against a small piece of land opposite their respective properties in Outram being purchased by Messrs Snow , and M'Murtrie, on the ground that it is likely to be required for railway purposes. Land not to be sold.

A request was read from David Bees and John Mlntyre and others that the Board would re-consider its decision upon the application by James Smith to purchase land in block L, Waitahuna West, known as the Mining Reserve. Referred to District Land Officer to report.
