MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

<s> , BALCLUTH A. nokth ward. The poll for member of Council for Ncrth Ward was taken on Tuesday, Mr P. Mason, Mayor, presiding. The candidates were Messrs Robert Cramond and Thos. Stanbrook. There was very little excitement during the day, but notwithstanding this, the electors polled well, exactly the same number having came forward as at the Mayoral election. At 4 o'clock a considerable number of electors collected at the Council Chambers, and a few minutes thereafter the result was declared as follows : — Cramond 41 Stanbrook - - 11 Mr Cramond briefly thanked the electors for the confidence they had reposed in him, and promised he would do everything that lay in his power for the municipality in general, and North Ward in particular. Mr Stanbrook thanked the eleven electors who had recorded their votes for him. He frankly confessed, however, thafc he felt very much disappointed. He had gone very carefully through the roll, and calculated that he would have twelve votes, and only eleven had recordod in his favor. — (Laughter.) If he were in the Council along with Mr Cramond he believed he would work well with him. He was not yet done with North Ward, for when the next roll was made up he would again contest the Ward with Mr Cramond, or any other Ward he might stand for. A vote of thanks to the Returning

Officer concluded the proceedings, which were most orderly and friendly throughout, not a single offensive or discourteous word having been heard uttered even in jesc. <*;> MILTON. The following was the result of the polling for WEST WARD. Capstick 25 Golding- 13 Poole 10 Mr Capstick was declared elected. EAST WARD. Gilbert - - - 23 Cunningham - - - 19 Mr Gilbert was declared duly elected. Mr Capstick returned thanks for the honor conferred upon him in returning him as a member of Council for West Ward. Pie had experienced more marked kindness during* the past few weeks than he had ever done in his life, and he assured them that in placing him in the position they had that day done, the electors would find their confidence had not been One thing he would endeavor to do was to unite the Mayor and Councillors in an effort to promote the health of the municipality, — a matter which had hitherto been much, neglected. He thanked them again for the honor conferred upon him. Mr Gilbert, in a plain, straightforward speech, thanked the electors for having returned him to the Council, ah honor which was much enhanced from the fact that he had not solicited a single vote. He had allowed himself to be nominated for the oflice simply because he had been asked to do so. He was not quite a novice in general business, and he was willing to bring his experience to bear upon anything" pertaining to the welfare of the citizens, not only of East Ward, but of the township generally. Mr Cunningham also returned his thanks to those who had voted for him, and a vote of thanks to the presiding officer (the Mayor) concluded the proceedings. oI The following was the result of the poll for Councillors at the undermentioned places :— DUNEDIN. Dodson - - - -65 Murray - - - - 40 Majority for Dodson, 25. EAST WARD. Ashor - - . c 39 "- Sinclair - - - - 25 Majority for A slier, 14. MIDDLE WARD. C. De L. Graham - - .37 Gcrdou - - - - 10 Majority for Graham, 27. AUDITORS. T. Thomson - - - ■ 1 59 A; Leek - - . . I^7 W. G. Fail - . . .87 The Returning Officer declared Messrs Dodson. Asher, and Graham duly elected Councillors for their respective Wards, ancl Messrs T. Thomson and A. Leek duly elected Auditors. SOUTH DUNEDIN. EAST WARD. Gabriel Hodges - - - 58 John Earrowman - - - 54 George Wybar - - *• 27 John Marriatt - - - 3 Three informal votes were recorded. NORTH WARD. Fred, G. Naumann - - - 82 Daniel M'lntyre - - - 82 James Baird- - - - 25 "William Watkins - - - 2 Sdveater Whitty - - -2 Four informal votes were recorded. SOUTH WARD. Thomas Heffernau - - - 38 John Thomson - . - 31 Johu Patterson - - - 21 Two candidates were returned for each Ward. ST. KILDA. PARK WARD. William Halligan - - - 39 Henry Arnolds - - - 36 William "Victory - - - 24 In the other Wards the candidates who stood had a walk over. GREEN ISLAND. The election in South Ward resulted in Mr Andrew M'Cabe being returned by a majority ot twelve votes over his his opponent, Mr James Loudon. For the North Ward Mr James Gray was returned by a majority of three over Mr James Runciman. The Returning Officer, Mr Eagerty, declared Messrs Gray and M'Cabe duly elected for the ensuing twelve months. PALMERSTON. Messrs John Keen and J. H. Gilligan were the successful candidates for West Ward. The voting was— Keen, 19 ; Gilligan, 18 • Scott. 16. Mr Ellison was the chosen of the ratepayers for North Ward. The polling was*— Ellison, 23; J. Johnston, 18.
