TOWN COUNCIL.
t A special meeting of the Town Council of Baiclutha was held in the Council • Chambers on Wednesday evening. .'. 1 There were present his Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Hogg, Hoge^ : Mason, Dunne, and Tosh. The Mayor explained that ; tne meet- ; ing had been called on tbje request of several councillors, to consider what action, if any, was necessary to be taken regarding the interference lon the part of Mr Alex. Bain,., ivith . the footpath leading to the railway terminus. The following letter from' Mr Bain was read :-— Balolutha, May 31 , 1876. To the Mayor and Councillors, Baiclutha.. Gentlemen, — Having got permission from the railway authorities to make an approach to the south side of the railway at the Baiclutha terminus, I hope the Council will see its way in aiding my endeavors by putting no obstacles in ' the way of making an approach to the railway, where everyone will have an equal, right and share in the benefits derived from onr railway. ' I shall be glad to have the valuable advice of the "Works Committee, that ia to say, if it i 3 worthy of their notice. I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient Bervant, Alex. Bain. Councillor Dunne animadverted in very strong teims upon Mr Bain's conduct in thus setting the authority of the Council at defiance, and taking upon himself tp interfere with the public streets. The whole ofthe Councillors present concurred with Councillor DunneVyemarks. --..->~ ... Councillor : Dunne moved, "That the Town Clerk request Mr Bain to desist from all interference with the footpath : leading to-, the, railway terminus, and that it be : intimated to Mr Bairi, that ~ should he desire to carry out any works in the locality, his first step is to lay plans and specifications of such work before the Council for their consideration;'\ Seconded by Councillor Hope and carried. The Inspector of Nuisances, who was present, Was directed to serve the uotice personally? ; upont Mr Bain, and should the instruction be not complied with, to take immediate proceedings against Mr Bain for a breach of the bye-laws. Councillor Mason suggested, that in the event of Mr Bain laying. plans and specifications ofthe proposed yvorksbefore the Council, he should '-be called
