PRIZE FIRING.

NO I. CLUTHA RIFLES.

Twenty seven members of the No. 1 00, Clutha Rifles, turned out on the 23rd May, to compete for prizes which had been presented by several gentlemen in the district, who wish to see every encouragement given to a company, which haa during the last year so signally distinguished itself in the shooting line. The match was a handicap one. The captain, and marker of the Company were appointed handicappers on this occasion, and seem to have been unusually successful in giving general satisfaction. The following are the scores ofthe ten highest : —

There were five shots at each range ; standing at 200 yards, any position at the other ranges. ' Vol. Alex. Blackie starting at scratch won the first prize, which was a handsome gold albert chain, and was presented by Mr Jas. Willocks (the Champion shot of New Zealand for this year), who is now Ensign ofthe Company, Vol. Blackie it will be remembered was also one of the Representatives, and tied for the second place with Vol. . Armstrong, The second prize was presented by Messrs Hislop Bros., Merchants, Kaitangata, the third by Mtss-s Stoddart Bros., and the fourth by Mr Dnnne. Vol. John Willocks who has lately joined the Copapany, also won the recruits prize, which was presented by Vol. J. C. Anderson, and was open for competition to all members who received over 10 points in the handicap. | The " Ladies Prize " which was won by j the Champion last season, was presented to him on the range. This was a gold chain given by the ladies of the district, i

It will be remembered that ten of the No. 1 Co. City Guards came out to Baiclutha, and fired a match against the same number of the No. 1 Clutha Kifles, on last Good Friday. On that occasion the Dunedin Company were defeated by 14 points, and with a burning desire to recover their lost prestige they instituted a course of competitions in their own corps, the ten highest aggregate . scorers in which, were to; constitute their team. Thus there could be none but shots of proved ability on their side, and in this manner' tbey fondly hoped to make sure of working the discomforture of their country rivals at their next meeting. The return March was fired at the Anderson's Bay Range, near Dunedin, on the Queen's Birthday. The Bruce Kifles also fired* a match against the City Guards at the same time. Aftei the match, the two country teams were by the Guards at Mi* Watson's Hotel, where a sumptuous dinner was provided. Nothing could exceed the kindness of Captain Wales and his team, a.nd their guests returned to theii* respective homes ..highly de-

: lighted with ...their reception. .We } would earnestly advocate the encourao%- --'. merit of all 1 such friendly trials, of, skill,' | as (no matter which team wins, the ; -match), their tendency is always to hi.-' ' crease emulation, and at the same" time fbstpr a kindly. spij'itynnong volunteers.
