GOVERNMENT LIBERALITY.

The Wellington correspondent of a contemporary, referring" to the .liberty of the General Government, says : — First, we had Colonel Macdonnell, who got twelve months' leave of absence on full pay to visit England. The gentleman had been loafing about Wellington for months without doing a hand's turn (indeed there is nothing lie can well do), and as a reward for his exemplary conduct, and especially for the way in which he behaved during last Parliamentary session, when certain stolen letters formed a subject of investigation, he gets a pleasure trip to England at the public expense. The Government probably thinks that he is a good riddance purchased at a cheap cost, but people generally cannot be purchased to see it in that light. Following upon Macdonnell conies Mr Wakefield, who has been treated upon the same liberal fashion. This gentleman has distinguished himself in boating circles — a good enough thing in its way — but not a thing tbat Government are supposed to take under their special patronage. That he was a yen- efficient clerk in the Civil service does not appear, seeing it is unnecessary, I understand, to have his place filled up during his absence.
