TAPANUI IMPROVEMENTS.
-(BY OCR TRAVELLING REPORTER.). -The township of Tapanui has been much improved durirg the past twelve months. Of hotels, the Commercial, owned by Mr Simmonds. is" a very decided improvement on the old hotol, formerly owned by Mr Audrew Allau. It has a spacious billiard-room on one side of the ground floor, furnished with a -first-class Alccck's billiardtable. On the other side- is a well furnished bar. On the upper flat the arrangements are extremely complete. In the front of the house (upper flat) is a capital commercial room furnished with sofas, &c. Family suites and single bed-rooms occupy the back part -of the flat ; the bedß and furnishings are of the most comfortable description. I should suppose Mr Sirnmonds will receive a considerable portion of the travelling patronage. Noble's Hotel. — This hotel has also been greatly improved, Mr Noble having erected a very handsome and comfortable addition to the old place. The building is in two storeys ; the ground flcor has a fine hall and staircase, a firstclass commercial show-room ou the right of the entrance; another private parlor its found behind the staircase, and the billiard-room is placed at tho back of the house. TJp-stairs are beautifully furnished family suites, together with single bed-rooms, each room having ceiling ventilation. Mr Noble's hotel is so wall known to the travelling public that it is needless to make •any further comment regarding it. Of the stores, I notice that of Mr Alexander McDuff, also a -number of fresh tradesmen's establishments. The auction rooms of Messrs Creagh and Co. have as healthy a look as Creagh •himself, who is a hearty fellow. Messrs A. Macgregor nnd Co. have t;*.ken in another partner, Mr Ferguson. The Good Templars now number over a hundred members, and are becoming very particular in their admittance of candidates. The other day a sister was proposed, who was stated to be most eligible for the position, but o»ving to the private spleen of some persons who understand not charity, the sister was black-balled. The example thus set by the Tapanui lodge, has uot been thrown away on the outside public who ask, as well they may, "is this the philanthropy of the Good Templars ?"
