To die— to be forgotten— and to lie In tbe cold grave, whtre all will pass me by, Careless aud heedless of who lies below Ab, it is hard 1 I do not w.sh;to go^~ To leave the busy world, the anxious race Fn which I hoped eo soon to take my place. Oh, I have never tried to write my name, With iron pen upou the ccrpll of Fame; But I have longed, with evnest longings too, The painful path of duty to pursueTo dp some good, some lonely heart to cheer,, ... To leave some record of my being here, In kindly deeds and adts of mercy shown To those whose lot was darker than my own. i And now to die j My resting-place will be Unde** the shadowy arms of ydn-ter tree, Where Autumns golden leaves and Winter enpws Will fall unheeded, and the step df those Whom I have loved will pass uhnoticed by;. And when tbey come td gaie dn Where t li* I shall not know it; Oh , how hard it ; seems To realise tbe vague uncertain dreams We have of the Hereafter 1 I alone, Must, venture forth to meet that dread : unknown; And .no loved voicte;, tip kindly-clasping . ; hand Can come to reassure me where 1 stand.
