JOURNALISM.
(To the Editor of the Clutha Leader.)
Sik, — New Zealand, with a population of about 300,000 souls, can boast of having 100 newspapers : yours is the last, but not the least of that journalistic army. I have just perused the first number, and have to congratulate both you , and the rising Municipality of Balclutha upon the aquisi« tion of a local organ of public opinion. The Clutha district is decidedly the best arena for a newspaper in all the rural districts of the Colony. I hope it will b« a financial success.
I see, from your city correspondence, that the Otago University has conferred its first degree of B.A. Sir, we must go from home to learn news. I need not tell you that the quasi-Universifcy ha 3 not the power to confer any acadamic degree, for it has no Royal Charter. It is simply a school about to be affiliated, along with other Provincial Institution?, to a. certain Colonial University that at present exists in nubibus. However, let that pass. Congratulating you again for your enterprise in starting a newspaper in the capital of Clutba'a beautiful and fertile valley, .and earnestly trusting that it will take root in the moral soil, and dispense a real blessing over the laud, — I am, &c, J. G. S. Gkawt. Dunedin, July 20.
