MILTON ATHENAEUM
The Fourth Annual Report of the Com. mittee of the Tokomturiro Atheuaeum and Reading Room, The Committee have-great.pleasure in reporting that the Institution still continues its usefulness, as a means of" diffiusing knowledge to all who avail themselves of its advantages. There are at present 1026 volumes in circulation amongst members of the Institution, t of which 900 have been ler\t out during the year, exclusive of a very large number of periodicals. The reading room continues to be well attended.' Most of the leading home papers and periodicals are provided, amongst which are the following: —Illustrated London News, The Graphic, Farmer, News of the World, Scotsman, Glasgow Weekly Herald, FuhMc Saturday Review, Chambers' Journal, Family Herald, Home News, Young Ladies' Journal, Good Words, Leisure Hour, Sunday Magazine, All the Year Round, Punch, Scientific American, Blackwood's Magazine, McMillan's Magazine. Of Colonial papers there are the Australasian, Australian Sketcher, Canterbury, Southland, and other New Zealand papers. There are 100 subscribers, of whom ten are life members. The total receipts during the yenr amount to LS7 4* 101., out of which the working and incidental expenses have been paid, and the pum of L 25 expended in purchase of new books, leaving a balance in hand of L 5 4i. The liabilities outstanding amount to about L3O, to meet which there are subscriptions, &c, to that amount still uncolleeted. The Committee again beg to express their thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who so kindiy rendered their valuable services at the concert; to Captain Hutton for the contributions to the Museum ; to Mr. R; W. Capstick for selling the papers and Periodicals by auction free of charge ; to Messrs. J. L S utter and Angus Kay for collections made by them; and also to the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association, for their kind donation. The amount of subsidy received from the Provincial Government is L 25, being on a similar amount forwarded by the Committee through the Education Board for the purchase of books —invoice and bills of lading for which have been received, and the shipment daily expected to arrive per Cartsburn—this will I prove a valuable and attractive addition to the Library. The Committee would earnestly appeal to the inhabitants of Tokomairiro to unite in supporting this valuable Institution.
