Post Office' Hours. The hours to be observed at the Shannon Post Office over the New Year holiday period will b*e the same as those for Christmas. On Saturday, December 31, normal Saturday hours will be observed and on Monday, January 2, and Tuesday, January 3, tlie office will be closed. There will be no mails, the telegraph office will be closed and the telephone exchange will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.'m. Unfavourable Weather. Prospects for fine weather for New Year do not seem bright. Heavy rain yesterday has made conditions underfoot very damp, with the result that at least two camping parties who were to have left yesterday for neighbouring beaches have cancelled their arrangements and will be content to spend the New Year at home. Four of the more hardy types left early this morning to spend .the next few days in the hills. One family has changed its plans from a holiday at a local beach and has left for the Hawke's Bay district. Queen Carnival Meeting. With a view to gaining assistance in Shannon for the queen carnival to be conducted throughout the district by the St. John Ambulance Division and Waitarere Surf Life-saving Club, a public meeting is being held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday next at 8 p.m. The Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, will preside and members of sports bodies and citizens are invited to attend. The winning candidate in the carnival will be given a tour of Australia and the second candidate- a tour of New Zealancu
