Mr. Holland's Warning About Road To Prosperity
. (Per
WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. In a New Year Message issued ■ today, the Prime Minister, Mr. Holland, after referring to the ad- ; vantages enjoyed by New Zealand, |f issued a warning in the following terms: "We must be careful not to fall into the error of thinking.that our way is easy and leisurely. If we want prosperity we must build on (the good fortunes we enjoy and apply our.labour, our energies, and our abilities to produce for our own enjoy ment the standards of. living so well within our reach." ! . The Prime Minister said that there were few short cuts to prosperity and while the Government would do its share the people should remember that the Government could give them only what it first took from them, and 'that there were not many things that the Government was better able to do than the people were able to do for themselves-. He appealed for consideration and tolerance and in a" special message to Government employees reminded them that the Government was in office to serve all and not to dominate anyone. The Prime Minister added that the expanding social system- required expanding production to support it. "We should be careful not to reach out for growth at a faster rate than our resources justify and should ever be wat-ch-ful against inflation; which could do more than anything else to destroy that which hard work and i industry have built up."
