Personal. ■ Mr. F. Stupples, oi Mill Road, was on Thursday admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital. Mrs. H. Grant, of Raukawa Street, is on a holiday visit to Napier. Mrs. P. Temuera, of Mill Road, is a visitor to the South Island, on account of the death of her sister. Mr. and Mrs. N. Clay, of Lower Hutt, erstwhile residents, spent Th'uisday renewing acquaintances in Otaki. Mr. and Mrs. A. Mudgway, of Te Horo, have been on a .tour of the North, their visit emhracing Hawke's Bay and the East Coast. Mr. and Miss Kempton, of Carterton, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. Walsh, Matene Street, for the Christmas holiday period. Miss Edna Ralph, of Auckland, is on a holiday visit to her parents, Mr. "and Mrs. W. H. Ralph, Mill Road. Mr. and Mrs. R. Urry, of Wellington, accompanied by their daughter, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. Taucher, Tasman Beach. Dr. Gibbs, chairman of the Wellington Children's Health Camp Association, was among the visitors to the Otaki Health Camp on Christmas Day. Mr. and Mrs. C. Sharp and family, of Domain Road, are visiting the former's parents,' Mr. and Mrs. G. Sharp, late of Otaki and now. of Hastings. Mr. Ran Jacob, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Jacob, of Otaki Railway, is home on three months' holiday leave, after which he will returfi to Australia to further his veterinary studies.
Mrs. A. Denton, of Otaki Railway, who has been confined to her bed for some weeks past, was on Wednesday admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital for treatment. Mr. L. J. Wild, of Tasman Beach, has been reappointed to represent Massey Agricultural College on the council of the New Zealand School of Agriculture, this body having certain jurisdiction over the two agricultural colleges attached to the University of New Zealand. Cyclist's Wins. At the amateur athletic meeting held at Featherston on Boxing Day, when there was a large entry of visiting competitors,- the local cyclist, Des. Smith showed outstanding form to annex the half mile and one mile events. Band To Play. Weather permitting, the Otaki Band will render a programme of music in various parts of the borough tonight, while the Band has been invited to assist various efforts in Paraparaumu on Saturday and Monday next. Band Visits Institutions. Although the rain which fell on Friday prevented the Otaki Band from giving its usual Christmas programme in the shopping areas, the Health Camp and Sanatorium, together with other places, were visited on Saturday evening when Christmas carols were played to appreciative audiences. Heavy Rainfall. In common with other. parts of the district, heavy rain was experienced on Friday and Saturday. The fall for the 24 hours up to 9.30 a.m. on Saturday exceeded the amount which fell for the whole of the corresponding month last year, 158 points being recorded. The fall for December, 1948, was 142 points. Greyhounds Secure Placings. A second to Black Pool Sam and a third to Nigger Boy were placings registered by locallyowned greyhounds which competed at the Wellington Provincia-1 championships at Hutt on Wednesday. The former dog earned £11 9s and a valuable trophy for his owner over the two-day meeting. Christmas Fours Bowling. Playing i'n the annual Christmas bowling tournament, Hain, Smith and' Douglas (Raumati South) and Baker (Otaki), with six wins each, have qualified for post-sec-'tion play. Symons and Connor (Otaki Railway) and Walsh (Otaki) have each secured five wins, Young (Raumati Soutji) four, and Green (Otaki Railway) and Merwood (Otaki) one each. Accident Narrowly Averted. Three separate drivers had some nerve-wracking moments in Main Street yesterday afternoon due to the meanderings of an apparently unaccompanied infant in rompers. Bounding off the f ootpath in a determined effort to cross the street, the wanderer caused an oncoming transport lorry to swerve and- hastily apply his brakes. A following car also emitted a screech as brakes were applied to avoid colliding with the lorry. Not content with causing anxiety to two drivers, the "infant almost in'stantly ehanged course and a third driver proceeding in the opposite direetion
to the two- other vehicles was iinmediately implicated. Thanks to the promptitude of all concerned, the culprit escaped, being hastily conveyed from the roadway to the footpath by a volupteer helper. Quite some minutes 'after the cause of the « near-mishaps was still unclaimed.
