Flood Of Mai! At C.P.O. In Auckland
•AUCKLAND, Dec. 22, The flood of Christmas mai] that has flowed through the apertures of the Auckland Chief Post Office in the last 10 days, has broken all records. During that period the augmented mai] 7'oom statf has accomplished the colossal task of sorting close on 2,500,000 letters but even this impressive flgure, recorded by automatic post markers, does not fully account for the labour of these busy men and women because thousands of packages and ejivelopes too bulky to pass through the maehines, were stamp* ed by hand. The hign water mark was reached on Monday when the staff handled 408,000 envelopes compared with- 349,00" on the busiest day last Christmas. At norma! times of the year the sorting of 150,000 is considered to be a good day's work. In the week froin December 12 to 19, 1948, a record total of 1,195,280 was established but last week the flgure was 1,517,390. The flood appeared to be receding today and it is not expected that any mai] reeeived the Post Office by Saturday morning, will remain undelivered until after Christmas. To cope with the rush 80 men and women have been added to the staff of the mail room.
