Successful Opening For Local Surf Club
The large crowd attending the o'fficial opening Of the LevinWai'tarere Surf Life-saVing Club at Waitarere Beach on Sunday was gratifyin'g reward for the! months of hard work and pteparation put into the .pToject by the comlnittee and 'club inembers.: The club patron, Dr. S. J.' Thompson, when officialiy opening the club, wished the memblers; every succeSs in their venture during the co'ming yeats and bolnplimented them nn the rapid progress made so far. The president, Mr. W. J. Barrat, then exten&ed a welcome to those preseht and' introdUce.S the official patty. Apologies for .absence were trecel'ved from Mr. M. H. Ora-fn andMr. E. J. Stanley, of the Boys'Training Centre. Mr. J. J. Maherr M.P., . congratulated the club on its excel-; lent beginning. He commented oh the great need 'for life-saving, facilities at Waitai'ere Beach and: expressed satisfaction on the pro-; gress so far made. Other speakers' were the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. R. A.; Frederiksoh, and the president oi' the Levin Junior Chafnber off Commerce, Mr. R. Long. Surf teams representing Island Bay, Foxton and Levin-Waitarere participated in p ttiabch past and a grand parade staged in an improvised arena. Later in the a'fternoon the three teams gave an exhibition of surf life-saving' under difficu'lt conditions. A 'surf ski display was also Witnessed by: onlookers. The committee wishes to thaiik all those who. so willingly contributed to the success of the day. A collection taken yielded r£l3.
