Flood Scheme Deferred Til Settlers Agree
WELLINGTON, Dec. 21. The Minister of Works, hlr. Goosman, visited the Lake Wairarapa area yes terday at the request of Mr. B. V, Cooksley, member for Wairarapa. Mr. Cooksley accompanied the Minister as •lid Mr. E. R. McKillop, Commissionei ■)f Works, and Mr. W. L. Newnliam, chairman of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Couneil. After an inspection of the area Mr, Goosman decided to defer action on the proposed Pukeko spillway eonstruction. The Minister said he realised the difficulties involved in the solution of the longstanding problem of comprehensive flood protection for this extensive area. He had every confidence in the engineers who were seeldng a solution of the problem in the best intefsts of all those affected and he lioped a deferment of the scheme would enalfie lOcal residents to settle their diffpr^nces of opinion as to the wises.t scheme to undertake. :
