Child Dies For Want Of Treatment
TAURANGA, Dec. 22. "In my opinion the chald's illness would not have resulted in death had it received medical or Plunket treatment. The calling in of such aid is definitely agalirist the religious beliefs of the parents and this fanatical view appears to be firmly arid slricefel'y held by practically all members of the tribe to which the parents belong." These words were adcfed to the verdict givfen by the coroner, Mr. Hylton, after an inquest held at Waimapu Maori Pa into the death, of a female child, Puatohimaru Williams, age'd about 41- months. A verdict that the child, being in an undernottrished condition,di'ed of asphyxia while .in a bout of whooping cough, was given. Evidence from the jjrirents showed that hoth helonged td the Ringatu faith. The mother, Ngahaka Williams, stated that three of six children had died in inf ancy. While she did not think that the child was* sufflciently ill to reqtiire the services of a do'ctdf, in any case she would not have obtained the services of a doctor. 'She did not belibve in them.
