New Theory Held As Cause Of Hay Fever
NEW PLYMOUTH, . Dec. 20. Like many weather stations, that at Taumarunui, under the charge of Mr. A. T. Porter, has pla/yed its part in the combating of many nasal and respiratory diseases by the colleetion of mould spores. The spores are collected on culture slideS and forwarded to the microbiologiSt at the plant diseases division of the Department of IricTustrial and Seientifie Research, at Auckland, Mr. N. Dye, wher6 they are the subjeet of research. The progress over the past 1S months has been such as to justify the expense involved. Diseases including hay fever, catarrh, sinus troxibles, and asthma come within the sphere of the- work and already mueh useful work has been done. The investigations will continue for a ftirther six months and the results of the data obtained are expeeted to coniirm the view that, whereas the diseases referred to were previously considered to be eaused by pollen or dust in the air, they could now be attributed to mould spores, and steps will be taken to combat them on the new basis. The spores are collected weekly and because of the geographical position Taumarunui is an important link in the chain of stations aupplying the data.
