Scramble To Be In Trip To Mediterranean
AUCKLAND, Dec. 19.v The Trumber of volunteei's who want to serve in the frigates Taupo and Hawea when they are transferred temporarily to the Mediterranean station next year, could man the ships nearly three times over. This was stated b> the naval officer in charge at Auckland, Captain A. C. Duckworth, when he addressed young seamen of H.M.N.Z.S) Tamaki at the end of the training year today. The New Zealand frigates are expected to spend six ,.months with the Mediterranean fleet t'o give officers and men the opportunity of training. witfi. units of the Royal Navy. They will leave Auckland early in March and their place on the New Zealand station will be taken by two Bay class frigates from the Mediterranean fleet, II.M.S St. Austell Bay and' H.M'.S. Yervan Bay. Captain Duckworth said that when there was a eall to man the frigates bound for the Mediterranean, the response was so overwlielming that only i about one in three. of the app.licatanfs ; could be selected. That was right and Iproper. It showed that young. Seamen ' wanted to get out and see the world. Inevitably some would be disappoiutbd as it was impossible to eram tbem all into the ships. However, they would have their turn. as it was proposed td make annual exchange's with ships of | the- Royal Navy..
