GOLDEN SPA AND KINTAMANI WON MAIN RACES AT LEVIN ON SATURDAY
£142 4s 6d For Every £1 Invested On Ihe Golden Spa-AImora Double
| '• After being well placed all the way, Golden Spa finished full of running to win the President's Handicap at Levin, and he drew away "Ovjir ihe last half -furlong to score by three lengths' from Blue Seal which just beat Lord Manna. Lord Manna was last early and in eighth place at the half-mile, Then on ,the long turn he was at a disadvantage because the pace had been cracked on and he was"on the outer when Loud Checks, /Golden Spa, Silver Sam, BlUe Seal and Leyma turned into the straight/ Golden Spa soon had charge and, galloping brilliantly, he won decisively from Blue Seal and Lord Manna which had a great tussle for ' second. ,
They ran the last seven furlongs in 1.29 2-5, and the last five in 61 seconds. Golden Spa's win was brilliant and against 48 2-5 for the last half-mile and 36 for the last three Lord . Manna, f orced to cover extra grottnd round the long turn, did well to fiiiish as close as he did. It was a great Cup trial. The order early was Abbotsford and Silver Sa;n from Golden Spa, Blue Seal, Sly Ferry, Leyma and .Merry Robin. Loud Checks soon went up to join Abbotsford, Silver Sam and Golden Spa, and ,Loud Checks was a clear leader at the half-mile. Hostess was fourth, followed by Merry Robin, Abbotsford, Silver Sam, Loud Checks and Sly Ferry. There "was a heavy sliowed before the first race but when that was over the day was brilliantly fine and warm. There was a lavge„attendance and the totalisator »investments, including the doubles pool (£4107), amounted to £7i,942J. The corresponding meeting was held in the autumn when £6l,585i was put through the machine. ... Playtos Led Always PlaytoS -won the highweight after being in flront .all the way.. Tussock, King of Quiz, Lord' Holland, Clive Bay, Joe's Cobber, Clive Belle, Result, Legendre and Sheilwyn were in that order behind Playtos at the five. Tussock aud Sheilwyn followed him into the straight, and a . furlong from the line Lord Holland stumUled' and recovered. Then Clive Bay went down. Clive Belle and Sparkling Scholar vvenl'down, too. The three vvenl down across the course and other horses had to be checked. Playtos went on smoothly and won by 6ver a lenglh from Result, three lengths 111 front of Tussock. Next were Sheilwyn, Husli, Legendre, Peria Prince and Sorrel. • Clive Bay and Clive Belle were destroyed, the former having sustained a broken fetlock anu ihe lalter a broken ioreleg. Culloden Mour stumbled and nearl.v fell two furlongs from the start. Two horses, Clive Ba.v and Clive Belle, were . destroyed after the Highweight Handicap as a result oi an ineident vvhicn ocourred just about a furlong olT ihe winning post. After heai'ing the evideiice oi G. Jenki'ns, rider of Clive Bay, 'the eutnmittee announc'ed that Clive Bay had broken a fetlock which caused him'to swerve out. Another horse struck him and brouglu him down, resulting in Clive Belle and Sparkling Scholar also falling. i The ineident was deeined purely acci- ' dental,- there being no interference. Clive Belle broke a shoulder and she and Clive Bay had to be destroyed. • Glenkindie and Dowry The favounte, Glenkindie, won the iirst division of tlie Maiden Race, and Dcwry, in the Howe colours. won the second. Though Glenkindie missed the .iump-out in ihe first division she was ailowed to settle down several places back, while Blue Sky was making tlie pace. Te Uha joifi^d Blue Sky a'nd they rau for tlie straight aliead of " Royaf TXupTial, Glenkindie and Arapeti. In the final furlong Glenkindie and Royal Nuptial went ahead and in a close finish Glenkindie got a ueck decision. ' TWo lengths behind Roval Xuptial was Matanui, with Blue Sky, Te Oha and Gpldfort next. Dowry, at a rather generous price, "wtis uot in the .first half-clozen at the halfmile .in the second division, but at the tliree furlongs' he followed Urenui's Gift, Melody Way, Tendril, Xigger Browt: and Ambergris. The field bunched in the straight and Dowry finished fast to win by a neck from Xigger Brown, who was two lengths in front of Tendril. Ambergris was fourth, ahead of L'renui's Gil't and Regenc.v Buck. , In the first division Wembley, SpilJway and Miss Robin fell. After hearing the evidence of Wo6ds, rider of Wembley, i SeilarS. rider of Spillwav. and a Rtatomont
from W. J. Broughton as to the condition of the track, the committee's finding was that ther§-..was no interference, and that Wembley's interference in the first diriaion of/'thfe maiden was caused bv the sltppery nature of the track at that "time. Spillway fell over Wembley and also Miss Robin. The occurrence was purelv accidental. Katydid and Lady Shoanagh Katydid scored an end-to-end win in the first division of the Apprentices' Hack. She was well clear at the hall'mile, and Refiect and Diplomacy went after her at the three. The finish was a good one and Katydid hung on to win by a head from Refiect, over two lengths iit front of Diplomacy ISrin's Pal was fourtli and Oerlikon and Lionne Rouge were next. Lady Shoanagh was never headed in the second division. Sweot Seventeen, Denote and Announcer attended her to the straight, but Lady* Shoanagh was riot in real danger and she won nicely liy over a length from Announcer which just beat Sweet Seventeen. Denote was fourth and BilJy Ruff'n *was fifth. Two-year-oId§ Siiare Honours Super Shah was soon in front after the two-year-olds were sent away and inside two furlongs Felicitous went up. to join her in the lead. the pair turning for home clear of Wee Wings aht?ad of Aden and Royal Man. The leaders fouglit it out and they flashed past the judge togeiber, the decision being a dead-heat. Aden finished well for third a length away and Wee Wings was a close fourth. 'Next were Alarm and Boleigh together. Good Win For Almora Almora, from Gisborne, led always in the Waitarere Hack Handicap, which was the second "leg" of the double, and after shotving the tva.v into the straight, dre*v away to win by three lengths from Bursar which, in seven th place at the three, finished well to just beat Sea Shantv, Which also finished strongly. Half a mile from home Fighting Fox and Almora were setting- the pace from Marloch and Winsome Lad, Serrayo and jvlaster Crusoe. Boyhood had moved up into fourth place at the three apd Bursar rnade a fast run as they made the turn Almora was never in danger of defeat and she won decisively. Master Crusoe was fourtltj ;followed hy Fighting Fox, Borhood andcPalais Glide. Kintamani Travelled Fast Kintamani was sluvt to leave t'he mark in the open sprint but he made un his ground quickly and led into the straight from Blue Bonny, Tlie Pagan, Recess and Livre d'Or. Kintamani went on strongly to win by a neck from Wild Xote whicit just got up to beat Tlie Pagan. Servile finished well for fourth. and Gratuity, Master Fox, Xigra, Blue Bonny and Recess followed in tiiat order. Kintamani ran llie last five in bettcr than CO seconds and the last half-mile in 48 2-5. Pictagrain and Blue Pier Pictagain and Blue Pier won tlie divisions of the concluding event and both l^d from -start to finish and paid doublefigur.e dividends. In the first division Pictagain led into the straight from -Rival Star. Paddv Joe and Tharariche, Vitesse and Grey Arcli, and went on fo win easily. .Tliere was a tussie fop- second and Brjt'Mance, which finished fa,st on the outer, just beat Paddy Joe. ' Vitfesse and Grey Arcli were next. Blue Pier soon had charge in the second i division- and he turned' for home followed by Dav.ils'har and defence. Waiford; His Lordship, which had lost ground at the Start, Lady Shoanagh and Super Duke. •Blue Pier finished solidly and won by ©yer ,
■ \ a length from Defence which beat Super Duke by half a head. Waiford was fourth ahead of Melite, Good Record and His Lordship.
