Claim On County For Loss Of Cattle

■HP 1 A claim for damages, stating that two animals had been seriously injured as a result of an accident due to loose planking on the overhead bridge on the Shan-non-Mangahao Highway, was received from a Shannon resident by the Horowhenua County Council at a meeting yesterday. The accident had occurred while a herd of cattle was being driven over the -bridge, two of them slipping through the gaps between the - plants.- As a r-esult- one - had died and the other had suffered injuries which necessitated it being destroyed. The owner stated that he would be satisfied with a remission equal to the store price of the 'two beasts. The county engineer, Mr. W. H. Fraser, said that he had received no compiaints about the state of •the bridge other than that forwarded by the claimant. Repairs on the bridge had been held up for a short neriod owing "to a shortage of the required timber, but as much as possible had been 'done during that time to ensure the comparative safety of the bridge. The council decided to accept no responsibility in the matter and ■ to take no action.
