Levin Competitors Prominent At Games Trials

At the Empire Games cycling trials staged at Wanganui on Saturday Levin cyclists and runners had a day out and came home with their share of the honours. . In the one mil'e junior cycle G. Tatana gained a third place whh a, very strong sprint after a gruelling race. G. Connoliy won the half mile senior sprint heat, and after staging a splendid sprint in the final gained second place. These results speak well' for the two riders, who should rise to greater heights as the season progressss. Ooher l'ocal riders in the events were R. and M. Harper, H. Watson, D. Yeates and P. Elliot, who although not .place getters, rode good races. The star performer in the •athletic events was J. Norton, who claimed dou&le honours in both the sprint events. This runner won bo.h the heats and the finals in the 100: and 220 yards, a very creditable performance. Another runner to do well was D. Lambert, who won his heat oi the 100 yards and secured second place in the final. In the 22C yards heat he gained a second place. His most remarkable effort was the winning of the shot putt. The second place in this event. went to Jefieries, who also gained a third in the hop, step and jump. The Shannon runner, A. Lee, who is a weekly competitor at the Levin meetings, ran a splendid race in the 440 yards to finish in that event with a handsome lead.
