An Otaki business man, having purchased a dwelling reported to be one of the first, if not the actual first, 'houses built in Levin, is haviilg it altered to suit the requirements of the present age. Found among papers to be removed was. a price list * dated August 1, 1894, over the signature of two Otaki, one Manakau, two Levin and two Shannon butchers, setting out the following:— "We,the undersigned butchers of the Horowhenua County, beg to announce our prices as follows. — "Beef, at per pound: Sirloiris and prime ribs, 4M; back ribs, 3£d; fresh brisket, 3£df corned round, 4d; corned briskets, 3-id; legs and shins, ld. "Mutton, at per pound: Hind quarters, 3-A-d; fore, 3d; legs, 4£cl; loins, 3id and 4-^d; neck and breast, 3d; chops, 5d; sides of mutton, 3 d. "Pork, at per pound: All joints, 5d; chops, 6d.
