WATERSIDERS PROTEST
WELLINGTON", Bee. 14.. A protest at the hold-up of foodships in Britain for use as storage vessels, was made by the biennial eonference of the New Zealand Waterside -Workers' : ITnion today. "The people of New Zealand have been fed a lot of information about the neeessitv for a quiek turn round of - ships with food for Britain," said the president of the union, Mr H. Barnes, "but ships -are being held there merely for storage purposes when the food eould better be given to the people in Britain and ships turned round again - " to go back into trade. We told the ■ people at the eelebrated Aid for Bri- ' tain eonference some time ago — as we have done over a period — that raekets are being worked," said Mr Barnes. "The shipping companies are being paid very substantial sums for the use of their ships as warehouses when the food should, in fact, be immediately dis ; charged and made available to the peo- I ple of Britain to whom we have sent ; it. We protest vigorouslv at this ridieulous situation," he concluded. "These faets are not new to us but ! they may be to others and we think : they should, be kaowu,"
