Junior Red Cross Members Visit Wellington
By way of a special .treat for Junior Red Cross members, Mrs. J. D. Campbell (Mangaore), district organiser for Manawata, 'ayfanged a trip to Wellington last Saturday when 125 children onade the journey. They comprised members of the Junior Red Cross circles from Fitzhertoer t . ;East, Aokautere,' Tokomaru, Makerua, Shannon and Foxton Schools. . The youhg people, with five adults in charge, occupied four carriages on the early morning train. The party was organised into groups of six, with a section leader in charge of each group. Mrs. Campbell reports that the children were complimented . on all sides on their excellent behaviour. There were no mishaps or upsets to sjjpil the' pleasure, the weather was fine and the programme arranged by the Wellington. Centre left nothing to be desired. n Upon arrival in the city the party was met by Miss P. Paterson, director of the Junior Red, Cross, and her secretary, Miss Norton. The children marched to Parliament buildings, where theywere shown through the whole building, including the Legislative Council, and even enjoyed the: thrill of trying out the variousimportant seats. From Parli'a-! anent buildings the party went on to. the Congregational hall, where; members enjoyed light luncheonprepared by the Wellington Redi Cross. • At the conclusion of the meal, Lindsay Brill (Fitzherbert Easb), secretary of her fcircle, extended thanks to the Wellington ladies for their most enjoyable lunch,; her remarks ibeing heartily endorsed by the cheers and applause of the remainder of the party. From Bunny Street, two trams: were needed to transport the children to the City Milk Depot, where they were shown the compiete plant even to the horses in the stables. Next in line was a visit to the museum and art gallery and there the young people were permitted to roam at will in their appointed groups. The whole party later boarded a double-; decker tram for the journey to the' zoo. The groups were again allbw-i ed individual freedom, with an ap-i pointed ' time for departare. ; : ; Mrs. Campbell stated on retixrn that she was very proud of Jier young charges when three minutes before the time of departare she. found every child lined up and; ready for the tram. Back at the; hall once more the younger mem-= bers rested while the older children visited the Turnbull" Library. ! Before leaving for home, Kath-i leen Ansell, of Aokautere, whb is the Manawata delegate to the Junior. Red .Cross camp to be held' in Wellington next JanUary,: thanked Miss Paterson, on behalf of the party, for the wohderful" arrangements made for J their; pleasure. In reply, Miss Paterson; again complimented the children on their excellent behaviour, which added greatly to their own; pleasure as well as to the enjoyment of the adults with .the party. Ice cream, apples and biseuite, supplied by the Manawata Centre = were distributed in the train on; the trip home. Leaders appointedfrom among the children made a! thorough inspection of the car-i riages before disembarkation so; that no coa'ts were left behind,; and to see that the carriages were reasonably tidy. Mrs. Campbell and her helpers! are to be complimented upon thespirit of responsibility and the respect- for property they are fostering in the rising generationthrough the Junior Red Cross movement. As the result of the trip> 125 country children have been given' the opportanity of considerably; widening their knowledge of the capital city, and all will , have; happy memories of the trip for many years to come.
