Bargaining With Nationalism In South-east Asia

Received Friday, 9.15 a.m. THE HAGUE, Dec, 8. The Minister for Overseas Territories, M. Johannes Van _Maarseveen, told the Dutch Parliament today that it was wiser to come to terms with nationalism in Southeast Asia than to drive nationalism into the arms of Communism. Speaking during the debate on the Bill for the transfer of sovereignty to Indonesia, M. van Maarseveen said that' only Russia would applaud if the results of the round-table conference on In-* donesia were rejected. The Foreign Minister, M. Dirk Stikker, in urging the House to accept the agreement, said that the ! international consequenees of a re- ! jection of the bill "would be disastrous for us." He added that the I world wou'd be abie to compel Holland to recognise the independence of Indonesia on terms more unfavourable than those reached • after laborious negotiation.
