' ■ ♦ : Long Distance Call. ' What is probable the first telephone call of its kind received through the local exchange came ■on Saturday, November 19, when Mrs. Hansen, of Shannon, spoke to her son in Canada. The call was taken by Mrs. Hansen ,at ihe residence of -her daughter, Mrs. N. Robbie, Heights Road, aofd reception was excellent. Mrs. Hansen spoke to her* son for several minutes and later commente'd that reception was as clear as a BBC broadcast over the radio.R.S.A. Christihas Party. ' A function which is always enjoyed by young and old alike is the Shannon ■R.S.A.'s Chrds.tmas Party, arranged by the women's section for children of- returped servicemen in this district. This year's party was held in the Parish Hall on Friday evening. Father Christmas was in attendance and' received a warm welcorhe from the youngsters. Gifts of sweets and balloons were later distributed to all the young fplk" and games and dances arranged by Messrs J. T. Bovis, B. Clayton and H. D. Aitchison were entered into with enthusiasm. Mrs. C. Guerin, vice-president of the women's section, extended thanks to all who had .assisted with the running of the function and Mr. •F. O. Burtt, president of the R.S.A., expressed sincere thanks ito the section for the splendih organisation of the party. /
