MR. CHIFLEY SEEN AS CAFITALIST
Received Wednesday, 7 p.m. SYDNEY, Dee. 7. Mr. Ghifley again declined to eomment on the documented charges by Mr. J. T. Lang that between February 19150 ahd April 1942, Mr. Ghifley and his'wife lent on mortgage a total of £15,000 at interest rates ranging to 9 per cent. Neither Mr. Alehzies nor Mr. Fadden has expressed a view bn the charges.- The Tastnanian ■ Premier, Mr. R. Gosgrove, referred to the allegations as "muckraking of the worst type." , Mr. Lang said today his charges were the climax-of lo'lig and detailed investigations. The Melbourne Herald correspondent who is travelling with Mr. Ghifley, says: "Mr. Lang and Mr. Chifley have long been enemies and Lang times his blow to give a major effect in the closing stage of a campaign. " The Victorian Premier, Mr. T. T. H oi] way,- said: "It is apparent the capitalists are not all in. the Liberal Party and that Mr. C^iifley is a very substantial capitfllist^* He should now ceaSfe his pfofeSSbd solibitude for depressibn siiffferers; ' ' Mixed feelings were revealed today by individuals in Bathurst who, at various times, borrowed monej'- from Mr; Chifley. . . Some were obviously distressed by the revelation which included the publication of their names, and were determined not to sav anvthing that would. embarrass Mr. Chifley. The Sydney Sun checked on six of the mortgages mentioned and diseovered that all had been discharged. One mortgagor said that when he complained about the high rate of interest, he was told by Mr. Chifley 's lawyer he could "take it or leave it. "
