Compromise Plan For Control Of Jerusalem
Received Tuesday 7 p.m. "LONDON, Dec. 6. A compromise proposal that would give Israel and Jordan sovereign "control in their respective zones in Jerusalem and provide for the protection of the'city's Holy places, received stror.g support today from United Nations. The proposal ^was submitted to fbe spe cial political committee by Rweden and the Netherlands. The proposal proprovides for the appointment of a United Nations committee to protect the Christian, Moslem and Jewish Holy plaees and to supervise gradual demilitarisation. The Times' Tel Aviv correspondent says the Israeli Prime Minister, Mt Ben-Gurion, told a crowded parliament that Israel would never give up Jerusalem of its own free will. He Left little doubt that a United Nations decision in favour of internationalisation would produce an extremely grave situation in the Holy City. He insisted that the exclusion from Israel of Jewish Jerusalem which he described as an "organic and inseparable part of the State, " would not contribute towards peace and that "Jews would sacrifice ! themselves for Jerusalem no less than | Englishmen for London, the. Rnssins for iMoseow or Amerieans for Washing ton," He made the now customary claim that Jewish Jerusalem wouln [have been destroved in 1948 if it hsd not been for the heroism of the popu lation and ' declared that his Govern ment -could no longer regard United Nations' decision of November 1947 as having any furtber moral foree. At the same time he stressed Tsrael's intention to preserve the speeial statns of the Holy places and religious buildings and the rights of all pilgrims and religious communities, without discrimipa , tion. He repeated his Government 's iwillingness to conchide with United i Nations a treaty guaranteeing all Isuch xights. 4
