Tonight;s Gazette publishes figures compiled by the Government statistician of acreages-'sown in wheat, oats, barley, peas and potatoes in 1948/49 and the estimated areas for 1949/50. The figures include' only holdings of ohe acre and over oi}tsside: borough boun^dcarifeh. • Th-e;1 StatiStician says a fair. 'quantity of " pothtoes is grown On sinaller holdings'. and within borough boundaries. > For 1948/49 the areas sown were: — Wheat 148,653 acres, oats 194,850 acres, barley 70,807 acres. • Estimates for 1949/50 are — Wheat: North Island 7000 acres; South Island 1.23,000 acres, Oats: North Island 13.500 acres; South Island 156,500 acres. Barley: North' : Island 8000 aeresj South Jsland 62,000 acres. . In 1948/49 the areas sown in peas were: — North Island 5619 acres; South Tsland 43,533 acres and in potatoes North Island 6412. acres, South Island 12,528 acres. Estimates for the present season are — Peas: North Island 5000 acres, South Island 38,000 acres. Potatoes: North Island 6000 acres, South Island 12,000 acres.
