The result of the elections wa,& sent in^to a private meeting of the Parlianientary Labour Party. Labour's defeat had no imme-. diate effect on the prices of New Zealand stocks quoted on the London Stock Exchange. The London Evening News andi Evening Standard prominently announeed on their front pages1 the defeat of the New Zealand Labour. Government. The Evening Standard, in fiveco"iumn banner headlines, said: "Australia Watehes as Tories Sweqp to Victory after 14 Years. New Zealand Leads the Way, Throws Sooialists Out." The Evening Standard, in a leading article. said: "The result of this election delineates the shape of things to come in other parts of the Emnire. It seems that the peooles of the Empire, having sampled 'the rigours and failares of socialist rule, are now turning back to the
,parties of freedom. What New Zea•land haa voted out today Australia •;and Grea,tj B.ritaiii should defeat tomorrow." The Evening News gave the re- ■ splt of the election under the followirig double-cohimn headings: '"New-, Zealand Labour Beaten After 14 Years. Tories Sweep the Polls." , Then it said in a leading article: "The best birthday present possible to. I|r. Churchill eomes today from New Zealand with the news of a solid, turn over in the general election there. "To those who believe that there are constitutional and democratic methods of ending the dreariness and muddle of socialist rule, and -"tha^ fhere is. a proper alternative to socialism, the victory of the New ' Zealand Nationalists will come as an encouragement. Britain may show that what New Zealand can do is zestful-ly worthy of repetition in the Old Country."
