More Maori Votes Cast Than Names On Roll
GISBORNE, NoV. 30. Polling in the Eastern . Maoi'i district 1 indieated that there were some gaps- in the compilation of the first Maori electoral roll, for whereas the roll listed 12,780 names the total number of votes cast was 13,417, with one small Booth's return to come. Instructions to returning offlcers iiiclu'ded provision ' for polling for those whose names did not appear on the official roll, But who claimed to Be entitled to .vote. ACtuallyf the system represented a compromise hetwsen the old and the neW method of polling. To the Maoris, the striking fea- . ture was the numher of informal j votes. These numBer 254 on the Parliamentary issue. In the liquor poll 776 voting papers were informal. The success of Mr. Omana in the Eastern Maori Parliamentary poll is attributatole largely to the combined sUpport of the Rataha and Labour groups, particularly from Nuhaka southWardS. The sitting Labour member polled moderately ' well throlighout most of the electorate, But the East Coast and Bay of Plehty pi'ovided a strong indication of goo'd National organisation, undoubtedly stemming from the suB{>ort given to Mr. Carroll's, cahdidatufe by Sir Apirana Ngata Und the tribal leaders of the coast i people. _ I
