Big Field At Kennel Club's First Ribbon Parade

The first ribbon parade sponsored by the newly-formed Horowhenua Kennel Club, and held in the Drill Hall on Saturday, could not be called anything but a successful venture. The event Was exceptionally . well-patronised, nearly 150 exhibitdrs and specta^tors being in attendance. In spite of the lengthy programme those who "wept to the dogs" wers unanimous in their praise of the excellent" organisation and- running of the proceedings. Some of the four-footed. participants were -.making their public debut and were noticeably bewildered by the Varied collection of others of the canine tribe, ahd the critieal gaze of the oniookers. On the other hand, there were those which thoroughly enjoyed the bustling activity , and the critical examination through % which thev were obliged to go.- ^ These were the old campaigners in experience, but not necessarily in.age. Altogether there were 167 entrifes, oWnerS transporting their animals from as far afield as Marton, Feilding, Foxton, Palmerston North, Otaki, and Wellington. Right up to' the cammencement of :udging the stewards were exceptionally busy receiving entries for the classes and ^takes. Proceedings were kept going at a lively rate", due mainly to the eMciency of the organisation, and the exCellent service giVert by the announcer, Mr. Norman Thornley. Easily the busiest man at the parade was the judge, Mr. J. Jarratt, of Palmerston North, who had a lengthy ahd diffieuit task confronting him. Exhibitors were uhstihted in their praise of his adjudicating. His knowledge of the points of dogs must be amazing, for he judged every breed with the air and confidence of a master. Not in a single case was there any haphazard selection of a prize-winner, and an aniiflal just had to have the characteristics to gaih an award. At the conclusion of the show Mt. Jarratt willingiy gave up coh-.-siderable time ih advisihg ahd assisting variOus exhibitors by explaining just what was hebessary to bring their animals up to show standard. Judge's Comments. In all the bfeeds exhibited the quality was well up to show standard, said ' Mr. Jarratt. tn practicaily every breed one or two stood out as excellent specimens. The Cocker Spaniels took pride of place both in numbers an*d quality. The best animal in the parade was Mr. Hoverd's Trish Setter "Reverie of Kashmir," which was a splendid type, and, if put down in nerfect show conditidn, it would be certain to bring much credit tD its oWfler. Actually the winning margin over Ihe Cocker Spaniels, "Fearless Beauty" (Mr. and Mrs. Carian), and "Lady Hermes of Willowrun" (Barry Ftirlong), was not large, as these two were . also outstanding types. Many^ entries were of grand quality," but were not shown to the best advantage by their owners. They should eradicate nervousness by training and perseverance. The puppies were very shy and rather difflcult to handle. The quality of the sporting dogs was first -class, the Labradors being the most noticeable. The Irish Settefs and Irish Water Spaniels Were also of excellent' quality. 'The terriers, with the exception of one really outstanding smooth-haired type, were rather disappointing. In the nonsporting class the Pomeranians were very good. One long-haired Collie was a remarkable. specimen and would have been much higher in the major honours, but he. refused to show his best. Taken all round, the parade was at least the eqtial of any that the judge has attended for many years, and he remarked that he considered the Venture an outstanding success. c, The following is the list of awards: — Junior Puppy Class.
