Arts Society's Innovation Creates Interest Something new to Levin was the pho'cographic exhibition arranged oy the Levin Arts Society on Saturday last in the Horowhenua College Library. in opening the 'exhibition, the president, Mr. H. B. Tomlinson, observed _that this was the last function 'arranged by the society this year, and brought a full prograrnme of events to a fitti-ng ciose. He referred to the loss which the society had sustained in the removal from the distri-et of two foundation members, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Rafhbone, who had been active in the society since its inception early in the year. Congratulating exhlbitors on the number and quality of their entries, Mr. Tomlinson extended -a welcome to all those who had come to view the exhibits. ■ Competitions which had been arranged for open, amateur and beginners' sectfons reeeived ciose on 100 enfcries, and some excellent work was to be seen. -Competitors from as far afield as Rangiora and Dunedin had sent photographs, and though they were awarded a number of prizes, it was pleasing to see that several local photographers also figured among the nrize-winners. Judging the competitions was Mr. E:arle Andrew, of Wellington, who also contributed a display of -jome of his own work in the field of outdoor por. rai ture and a sslection of ballet photographs. His father, Mr. S. P. Andrew, sent a display of portraits taken in 1903. Also featured was a fine coilection' of landscapes contributed by Mr. George Chance, F.R.P.S., whose work is well known all over the world, ancl a. number of prints by Mr. Noel Miller, of Rangiora. Displqys by local artists included .a selection of -coioured photographs by Mr. Havelock Williams, some framed photographs by Mr. J. Rogers, two coloured miniai.ures by Mrs. A. Byrne and some illuminated let-
tering, part of Gray's Elegy, by Mr, J. Watson. In the open section amateur and professionai photographers competed on equal terms and a high standard of work was maintained. The champion photograph was a fine study of an abandoned house in Italy, entitled "Casa Abandonata," and was contributed by an ama'eur, Mr. F. H. Williams, of Dunedin. In the amateur section the first two prizes in the landscape .class went to members of the Rangiora Camera Club, but after that local photographers held their own against all-comers. There was keen competition for the points prize in uhis section, only three points separating the first from uhe fourth. In the beginners' section, which was open to those whose photographs were developed and printed professionally, competitors who had • gone to the trouble and expense of having their photographs enlarged scored an ofcvious advantage. over theose who had enLered only contact prints, though the judge looked -closely at every entry, however small. There is no doubt, though, that enlargement shows up the merits of a good negative. Outstanding in this section was the work of Mrs. 1. C. Craw, of Linton, who eyidently has an unusually good eye for a picture. List Of Prize- Winners. Open landscape. — Rev. G. B. Skne-Blandy (The Last Straw) 1, Mr. W. L. Clark (Summer Haze) 2.
