Flower Show And Calf Judging Make Busy Day At Otaki School

Friday last was a red letter day, for pupils and teachers of thei Otaki School. The School Agricul- 1 tural Club's calf and lamb judging took place and in addition a flower and vegetable show. Early in the day children of all sizes were seen heading for school. Some had a single bloom, others arms and baskets full of flowers and not a few sugar bags slung over their shoulders, the latter evidently eontaining vegetables. The scene at the school was a unique one. Groups of children of all ages were formed under the charge of their various class teachers and the exhibitors were given • avery assistance, while those not taking part were called on to help in arranging entries for exhibition. As fresh arrivals joined the many groups, they too received offe'rs of assistahce which were readily accepted. Parents and others mterested had' been invited to attend and view the exhibition, and high praise was offered on all sides. Three dlassrooms were necessary to accommodate all the exhibits and it .is no exaggeration to say that the display would have done credit to any organised society. One judge, with a lifetime of experience, confirmed this. The quality and variety of the blooms had to be seen to be believed, with vegetables also making an attractive array. There were few shortages and even the all-import-ant potato was very much in evidence. Outstanding Exhibit. There were numerous exhibits which excited unusual interest. One in particular calls for special commendation. It was a miniature farm, exhibited by Gavin Kendrick, whose creative mind seems destined to take him a long way. His miniature was modelled around a hayfield, with harvesting operations in full swing. A grab, a loader witl} horse tied to it, a tractor-driven hay sweep, wire fences and gates, with a can-laden lorry just returned from the factory could all be plainly recognised. In contrast to the flower show, entries in the calf competitions were smaller thau for some years. However, here again, quality entries were very much in evidence and the judge, who appeared most thorough and pamstaking, was unable to make any snap decisions. 1 Three pet lambs were.paraded by tiny tots and thest were the centre of attraction. The judges were as follows: — Primer classes, Mrs. O. H. E. Yates; decorative for standard classes, Mrs. M. J. McGilligan; decorative for Forms I and II. Mrs. H. Taylor; cut flowers, Mr. C. Evans; vegetables and fruit, Mr. E. T. Bartosh; calves and lambs, Mr. C- E. C. Webb (Levin) . Chairman's Congratulations. During the afternoon tea adjournment, Mr. H. Taylor, chairman of the School Committee, congratulated all who had played any part in the success of the many activities during the day, and urged parents to continue to encourage their children. He extended special thanks to the teachers for their share in the wbrk, and thanked the judges of exhibits in the show and of the agricultural competitions' on their efforts. The headmaster, Mr. O. H. E. Yates, said that . the day's successes proved that the school was proceeding on the right lines. It was important that this should be so. He also extended thanks to Mr. Webb for travelling to the school and carrying out his important duty, with thanks also to the other judges and to the Otaki Horticulture 1 Rnp.ip.tv.

Mr. Webb, in acknowledging the thanks extended, congratulated the school on its interest in the many spheres, and made mention of the fact that the calves were of a very high order. He also extended congratulations to the many parents present for their interest in the work of the school. A vote of thanks to the staff and to the senior pupils for the afternoon tea was also accorded. list of awards The following is the complete list of awards: — Primers 1 and 2.
