Brilliant Win For Excellency In New Zealand Cup
Highlights of the first. day of the Canterbury Jockey Club 's New Zealand Cup meeting incliided Excellency 's brilliant finishing run to win the Cup by a neck from Liebestraum, beaumaris' track record in the Derby, Pastel's brilliant win in the Welcome Stakes in which she ran five furlongs in 57 4-5 to equal the New Zealand and Australian record, and Sweet Spray 's 1.9 1-5 for the six furlongs of the Stewards' Handicap.
EXCELLENCY' S STAKE WINNINGS Excellency, owned and bred by Mr. W. T. Oliver, a farmer of Southiand, has now won from four furlongs to tvvo miles and has earned £15,245. She is now trained by P. W. Ellis at Invercargill andi was ridden by his son, W. F. Ellis. Trainer Fined £10 The Eiccarton trainer, H. Nurse, was charged under Rule°205 with improper behaviour towards officials of the> club. After taking into consideration the fact that Nurse had expressed regret for his conduct, the judicial stewards deeided that he be fined £10. Presentations Made Presentation to princtpals in racing during the 1948-49 s^ason were made oh behalf of the New Zea'land Racing Owners', Breeders' and Trainers' Assoeiation by Mr. D. E. Wanklyn, chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club, at Riccarton on Saturday afternoon. W. J. Broughton, the leading jockey, was presented with a silver salver, W. D. Skeiton, the leading apprentice, with a silver cup, and on behalf of Mr. L. S. Otway, owner of the champion sire, Foxbridge, Mr. Ken Austin accepted a shield. The presentation to the leading owner, Mr. W. S. Goosman, M.P., was postponed as he was not at the meeting. Langham and Peridot led past the stands with a round to go from Renowned, Speedy, Sir Garnish, Liebestraum, Elofa,' Western Front, Distinction and Night Owl, with Excellency towards the rear. With a mile and a quarter to go Elofa had joined Langham in front from Maryburn, with Peridot and Renowned next, and then Speedy, Sir Garnish, Eriskay, Night Owl, Welcome Guest, Western Front, Liebestraum, Fine Night and Excellency. There was little change in the order at the half-mile, . and into the straight Maryburn was leading Langham, Sir Garnish, Liebestraum, Renowned, Peridot, and Night Owl, while Excellency, very wide out, had only two horses behind her. Renowned drew out, but was 'immediately challenged by Liebestraum, who hit the front inside the last furlong. He appeared to be going strongly, but Excellency finished with a brilliant run on the outer and ran him down on the post 1:0 win by a neck going away. Renowned was a length away third, with two lengths to Maryburn, and then came Night Owl, followed by Speedy, Fine Night, Eriskay, Distinction, Avenger, and Langham.
