The planets Venus and Jupiter are now dominating the western sky for most of the evening. Venus is much the brightest object, being about ten times as brilliant as Jupiter, and exhibits phases like the moon. Jupiter is attended by a retinue of four satellites, visible in a small telescope, which sometimes disappear behind or move across the face of the planefc. Venus is a little smaller than the ea.rth,- having a' 'diameter of 7600 miles, while Jupiter is the giant planet of the solar system and , has an equatorial diameter of 88,700 miles. It is over 1300 times the size of Venus. Compared with the distance of Jupiter, 507,000,000 ? miles, Venus is comparatively close to the earth at present, being only 65,000,000 miles away.
