Minister Makes Intriguing Remark
AUCKLAND, Nov. 17. "I think it is safe to say that after the election I gtay possibly he Minister of Railways, " said the • P ostmaster - General and Labour candidate for Gr§y Lynii, Mr. F. Hackett, in an address in the ' Esquire Theatre tonight. An attendance of about 280 gave the Minister an attentive hearing, . When he was approached after the meeting, Mr; Hackett declined to elucidate his remark. He made the statement when referring to . National Party criticism of losses incurred by Government departments, including the Railway Department. Later in his address which lasted for about two hours, the Minister forecast that Labour would take the Otaki seat from the sitting National Party member, Mr. J. J. Maher, just as it took North Shore from Mr, H. T, Morton last thne, He said the Government had worked with a slender majority in the last session aiid he stressed the need for increasing the working margin. The gain of the Otaki seat would offset the loss of Roskill.
