Attack On New Drug Deprecated
Received Wednesday, ^7 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 14. Comment in the British Medieal Journal that widespread use of the drug streptomycin is harmful has drawn protests both from Canada and the United States. Dr. G. R. Brow, head of the I&oyai Victory Hospital, Monteal, has stated: 1 1 The attack is most unwarranted. Streptomycin has donp some wonderfui things. In treating tuberculosis I have been surprised by the rapidity of the improvement which followed its use. It is a great pity that a statement oi this kind should be made from such a source. It might deprive Britain of a drug which we know is doing wonderfui work." _ ' In Britain similar surprise has bepn expressed at the nature of the B.1VL.A, 's eondemnaton. Dr. Desmond Mp,cManus, a leading physician, said: t'Tne article is grossly erroneous. Streptomycin has proved its values beyond all doubt. Many a mother whose child would have ^epn d®ad without it blesses the ward styeptpmj-cin. It is one oi the greatest antidotes to certain types of Tb. ever discovered. "
