Expert's View On Atomic Bomb Casualties
WASHINGTON, Nov. 13. An atomic energy expert today declared that an at'omic bomb explosion would kill almost every person within a one mile radius. He was Dr. George Lyon who was chief navv safety offlcer at the Bakini tests. He challenged the statement made at the recent Congressional inquiry by a navy officer who testified that a person would escape serious injury if standing about oue mile away. Dr. Lyon said: "This isn't true. Few people exposed in the open within a radius of one mile, would escape serious injury. There would be nearly 1 00 per c'ent fatalities. Between one and two miles there would be manv serious injuries. Between two and three miles there might be many injuries but most would not be serious." Dr. Lyon said the greatest danger would come from the tremendous blast and terrific heat. The effeets of radiation would take far fewer liv-es. Dr. Lyon is now a member of the national researeh council 's committee on atomic casualties.
