Use of "Wonder Drug" May Have to be Abandoned
Received Priday, 7.30 pjm. LONDON, Nov. 11. Britain's 25,000 doctors have been warned that the use of the wonder drug streptomycin may have to be abandoned because it is too cLangerous. The British Medical Journal says the drug could have serious poisonixig effects on the "eighth nerve," causing giddiness and deafness, and might even upset the patient's sense of balance permanently. The journal adds: "Streptomycin is much more harmful and also less potent than penicillin. The drug is used frequently to cosmbat tuberculosis, hut in the majority of cases the patients become resistant to the drug and remain so indefinitely."
